Blast in Southern Moscow Claims Life of Senior Military Official

    Fatal Explosion Near Residential Building

Russian authorities have launched an investigation after a car explosion in southern Moscow on Monday killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior official within the country’s armed forces. Investigators said the blast occurred in a parking area beside a residential building and left Sarvarov critically injured. He later died from his wounds. Sarvarov headed the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, according to the Investigative Committee, which confirmed his death through its spokesperson.

Criminal Case and Lines of Inquiry

The Investigative Committee said it opened a criminal case into Sarvarov’s death and is working to determine who was responsible and why the attack was carried out. The motive remains unclear, but investigators are examining several possible scenarios, including foreign involvement. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko. She said authorities are conducting forensic and explosives examinations, questioning witnesses and eyewitnesses, and analyzing surveillance camera footage from the area.

    International Response

Ukraine has not commented on the allegations or on Russia’s claims regarding potential Ukrainian involvement in the attack.

    Earlier Incidents in the Capital

The killing follows a series of similar incidents in Moscow since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed when a remotely detonated scooter exploded, while Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in April after a car bomb attack. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for either incident, and Russian investigators have continued to treat the cases as separate acts.
