    New Award Adds Political Weight

Organisers placed Donald Trump at the centre of the 2026 World Cup draw by granting him the new FIFA peace prize. He has campaigned for similar honours and long sought global recognition. Observers expected him to win the award before the event began.

Trump accepted the prize during the draw in Washington. Gianni Infantino supported his candidacy and praised his attempts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. Infantino declared the award a tribute to Trump. He stressed football’s power to unite people while shifting briefly away from FIFA’s sporting mission. Trump told reporters at the Kennedy Centre that he did not know whether he would receive the honour. He said he cared more about saving lives than collecting awards.

Officials Highlight Purpose of the Prize

FIFA characterised the award as recognition for individuals who take exceptional actions for peace. Officials said the prize celebrates people who unite communities around the world. The timing drew attention because the administration faced scrutiny for lethal strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. Trump also intensified his rhetoric on immigration during the same week.

    Global Reactions Follow the Ceremony

The Nobel Peace Prize went instead to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. She dedicated part of her recognition to Trump and thanked him for his strong backing of her movement. International commentators tracked both awards and noted the political implications surrounding each decision.
